Please don't teach my child...
It takes seconds for you to teach my child things they shouldn't be doing.
Please don't teach my child. Those who do not have children or those who haven't had children for a very long time seem to forget how impressionable and clever they are. Someone in our family was so happy that he had showed my 2 year old daughter how to drag across the little chair in her room, stand on it and climb on the bed. Thrilled he was. He came out of the room beaming. The first thing I thought was SHIT. I had already drilled into Billie (my daughter) that chairs are for SITTING ON. I'm like a record player at meal times, "Chairs are for sitting on". "Chairs are for sitting on". And then in half a minute he had not only taught her that it was fine to stand on chairs, but also how easy it is to move the chair around. As a parent we are constantly considering future consequences of our own teachings as well as what we are role modelling to our children. I always put my seatbelt on in the car because I want my children to know that seatbelt wearing is non-negotiable. I always brush my teeth in front of them, non-negotiable. I never stand on chairs (in front of them) as it's non-negotiable.
I now have caught my daughter and her little chair all over the house. Standing next to the just boiled kettle, reaching over the bench near sharp knifes and crayon in hand, hovering over important documents. Not to mention all the times she has over balanced and ended up in tears on the floor.
So I beg all of you out there. Think before you teach! If unsure, ask the parent or do not teach at all. It only takes a few seconds for them to learn and months of torture for me. Thank you for listening to my vent, I'm off to stop my daughter and her little chair, attempting to turn on the stove. 😁
